Charles Sumner

Charles Sumner (January 6, 1811March 11, 1874) was an American politician and statesman from the U.S. state of Massachusetts. A noted lawyer and orator, Sumner was at various times a Whig, a Free Soiler, and a Republican. He devoted his enormous energies to the destruction of what he considered the Slave Power, that is the conspiracy of slave owners to seize control of the federal government and block the progress of liberty. He served in the U.S. Senate for 23 years, from 1851 to his death, gaining fame as one of the most prominent abolitionists, Radical Republicans, and Liberal Republicans.
