Lawrence Dimitri Elliott was born on September 25, 1961, in San Diego, California. He is an author and a contributor to the best-selling Chicken Soup for the Soul book series. At the age of 13, he was part of the first group of San Diego inner-city minority children to participate in a city-wide busing program. The group of mostly African-American, Latino, and Asian kids were met with quite a bit of hostility from many of the students and parents of the predominantly white neighborhood. At the same time, Lawrence was targeted as having a reading disability. He was immediately placed in a special reading class. What started out as the worst period in his life turned out to be a blessing. After working with a reading development teacher, they both uncovered a gift: he had a talent for writing. As a special assignment, his teacher tasked him with submitting to her an essay a week. He loved it so much, he began writing three or more. From that point on, Writing became an important part of his life.
