If therefore my work is negative, irreligious, atheistic, let it be remembered that atheism -- at least in the sense of this work -- is the secret of religion itself; that religion itself, not indeed on the surface, but fundamentally, not in intention or according to its own supposition, but in its heart, in its essence, believes in nothing else than the truth and divinity of human nature.
Ludwig Andreas Feuerbach (July 28, 1804 September 13, 1872) was a German philosopher, the fourth son of the eminent jurist Paul Johann Anselm Ritter von Feuerbach. He was born in Landshut, Bavaria and died in Rechenberg (since 1899 a district of Nuremberg). Nietzsche is quoted to have said that Feuerbach means 'Fiery Brook'. Incidently, Feuerbach said the famous quote "you are what you eat".
