forgiveness of sins

We first have to define "sin" before we can determine why it is necessary to be forgiven of them or by whom. Sin is any thought or action that is contrary to what God says is the thing to do. Satan is Gods enemy and wants us to disobey God and Satan seeks to influence us constantly. Since God is the one who is the offended party, He is the one who we need to ask forgiveness from. He offers his forgiveness to us and made it possible through the death of his Son, Jesus. Jesus was then resurrected to demonstrate his power and preeminence over Satan. When we recognize the fact that we have sinned and consequently would suffer the consequence of sin; separation from God forever, we then can "ask God to forgive us of our sins". In the Bible John 3:16 says, "For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life" (forgiveness of sin).
