William Edward Burghardt Du Bois (February 23, 1868 - August 27, 1963) was an American civil rights activist, leader, sociologist, educator, historian, writer, editor, poet, scholar, and socialist. He became a naturalized citizen of Ghana in 1963 at the age of 95. David Levering Lewis, his acclaimed biographer, wrote, "In the course of his long, turbulent career, W.E.B.
